Karen Bovard

Karen Bovard currently writes for The Hartford Advocate. She holds a Ph.D. in Theater and Women’s Studies with a concentration in directing from the Union Institute and University, and interdisciplinary master’s and undergraduate degrees from Wesleyan University.

Director of more than 60 productions over the last 30 years, she designed both sets and costumes for many of those. Since 1996 she has served as Director of the Creative Arts Program at Watkinson School, a progressive independent day school in Hartford.

She has a long-standing interest in the arts as a way to promote resiliency in individuals and cultures, and has traveled repeatedly to Cambodia to work with master musicians who survived the Khmer Rouge and to teach communication skills to deaf and disabled teens.
