“THE MARVELOUS WONDERETTES” INVADE WATERBURY
By Bonnie Goldberg
Wallflowers, starch your crinolines, leave the safety of your corner chairs and venture out on the dance floor for some nostalgia and fun. Seven Angels Theatre in Waterbury, until Sunday October 24, will be hosting an old fashioned 1958 high school senior prom and you’re invited.
Dust off your blue velvet dance card and prepare for a musical journey back to the glorious days of rock ‘n roll as “The Marvelous Wonderettes,” a quartet of pastel lovelies, prepare to knock your bobby sox right out of your saddle shoes. If you’re of the right age and inclination, you’ll recognize almost every one of the great golden oldies.
Come let Lulu Lloyd, Marissa Perry, Lynn Craig and Crystal Mosser compete to be Prom Queen in this delightful ditty of three dozen hits of the 1950’s and 1960’s in a musical marathon written and created by Roger Bean, with musical arrangements by Brian William Baker and orchestrations by Michael Borth, under the snappy direction of Semina De Laurentis.
All the squabbles and insecurities of high school teenage years are on display as Missy, Suzy, Betty Jean and Cindy Lou decide if they are B.F.F.s (best friends forever) or rivals to the death, cat fighting over boyfriends and who will be voted the coveted queen for the night.
In the meantime, the audience is treated to such treasured hits as “Lollipop,” “Stupid Cupid,” “Sincerely,” “Mr. Sandman,” “It’s My Party” and “Leader of the Pack.” An unsuspecting audience member even gets to go on stage as the favorite teacher “Mr. Lee” who is the secret crush of at least one Wonderette.
For tickets ($29-39, students 30 and under with ID only $10), call Seven Angels Theatre, Plank Road, Hamilton Park Pavilion, Waterbury (off I-84) at 203-757-4676 or online at www.sevenangelstheatre.org. Performances are Thursday – Saturday at 8 p.m., today at 2:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.
Come enjoy a songfest of golden oldies that will ignite warm fires of nostalgia as the Marvelous Wonderettes serenade for the super 1958 senior prom and then reunite for their tenth year reunion.
This will appear in the Middletown Press on December 18.
